Public Intervention with Sound

This public intervention workshop offers an opportunity for artistic practices in sound. We will intervene in public spaces with a focus on the characteristics of the underground station “Nollendorfplatz” where we will exhibit the works at the end of the workshop.

This seven-day public intervention workshop offers an opportunity for artistic practices in sound. You will be encouraged to reflect and intervene in public space and daily life, focusing on individually chosen site-specific aspects. The place for our intervention will be the underground station  Nollendorfplatz in Berlin Schöneberg, where we will exhibit our final work at the end of the workshop.

Nollendorfplatz is a busy intersection of everyday life and tourism, private and public transportation, different social and political circles. It bears witness to its own past and present. We will explore this pulsating crossroad from above and from the underground, disclosing different perspectives for each participant.

Participants will approach their project with the use of the medium sound and gain a deeper understanding of public space and art therein. You will have the opportunity to get artistic experience in open-minded surroundings with international participants from various backgrounds.

SCHEDULE

Day 1: Short introduction to sound, public and site-specific art, and an insight into different approaches to sound installations in public space such as works by Max Neuhaus, Brian Eno, Bill Fontana, Sam Auinger, Peter Cusack and Georg Klein

Day 2: Presentation of assignments (10 min each), exploration and reflection on Nollendorfplatz

Day 3: First idea presentation, work on individual project, equipment list

Day 4: Work on individual project, individual meetings

Day 5: Work on individual project, 2nd idea presentation

Day 6: Work on individual project

Day 7: Exhibition of produced work at U Nollendorfplatz


REQUIREMENTS

Various approaches to this project are valid, nonetheless, you are expected to have basic knowledge and skill to realize your project with your chosen equipment and material. E.g. if you want to work with a field recording, you need to have basic knowledge of the equipment and be able to carry out the recording, editing and arranging of sounds on your own. Some equipment can be provided by the university, but special material/equipment needs to be brought along by the participants.

On the 2nd day each participant is expected to give a 10 min presentation about a piece (art, text, performance, music, architecture, etc.) or a person (artist, theorist, philosopher, politician, architect, etc.) around and about the workshop theme. When talking about a person or a piece, please provide a bit of background info (when/where s/he was born, the piece was shown, etc.).

Daisuke Ishida (b. 1980, Tokyo) is a Berlin-based artist, working with sound and contemporary media. He studied Political Science and Economics and Sound Studies in Japan and Germany, respectively. He is interested in the consequences of artistic praxis and theory in sound, space, and perception. His works explore the boundaries of ephemeral and time-based media to open up new perspectives on spatiality, while his understanding of space extends from the physical to the social and political realm. He strives to induce a multitude of complex individual experiences of space, that cause the spectator to reassess his/her understanding, position and relation to their physical and conceptual environment.            

Since 2012, he has been teaching at The Berlin University of the Arts, UNI.K Studio für Klangkunst und Klangforschung (Studio for Sound Art and Sound Research) and the master’s program Sound Studies and Sonic Arts. He was a recipient of the Work stipends New Music and Sound Art by the Berlin Senate in 2017. In 2002, he co-founded The SINE WAVE ORCHESTRA which has received Honorary Mention of the Prix Ars Electronica 2004, Stiftung Niedersachsen work stipends 2009 at Edith-Russ-Haus für Medienkunst and Grant from the Saxon State Minister for Higher Education, Research and the Arts at Cynetart Awards 2018. 

Daisuke Ishida has internationally presented his artistic activities in museums, festivals and galleries such as Akademie der Künste (DE), Ars Electronica (AT), Arsenals of the Latvian National Museum of Art (LT), deaf - Dutch Electronic Art Festival (NL), Edith-Russ-Haus für Medienkunst (DE), ICC - InterCommunication Center (JP), International Triennale of Contemporary Art Yokohama (JP), ISEA - Inter-Society for the Electronic Arts (USA), MACO - Contemporary Art Museum of Oaxaca (MX), MART - Museum of Art, Rovereto and Trento (IT), MOT - Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (JP), Singuhr Hoergalerie (DE), Steim (NL), Transmediale (DE) and YCAM - Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (JP).
