Two Steps Further: Network Meeting of Cultural Management Alumni

Together with the colleagues, Cultural Management Alumni with at least five years of work experience will practice, deepen their knowledge and understanding of the diverse Berlin theatre landscape and network. The workshop is presented in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut.

An opportunity rich in content for cultural managers to broaden their professional networks and receive inspiring input through expert trainings and discussions with Berlin theatre makers. 

For the first time the Goethe-Institut and Berlin Summer University of the Arts based at the Berlin Career College of the Berlin University of the Arts offer a joint summer course. Alumni of both institutions or of performing arts studies with at least five years of work experience are invited to an international network meeting.

During the six day event they will visit several Berlin theatres, see performances and meet producers and dramaturgs to discuss different subjects related to the specific artistic profiles of the theatres. They are given the opportunity to network internationally, as well as to deepen their knowledge and understanding of cultural management. In meetings with representatives of artist’s lobby groups they can reflect on working conditions in the performing arts and their own role as manager/artist.

The participants will also receive an intensive hands-on training in presentation and communication skills by the Swiss journalist and communications consultant Christine Loriol.

One-on-one coaching sessions with coach, acting teacher and theatre director Jessica Steinke can be booked as additional service to support participants in reflecting on their individual professional development. The coaching session (60 min) will cost 80 EUR. Please let us know if you would like to choose this opportunity as places are limited up to 10 persons.

As part of the schedule time will be allocated to work on individual projects.

• Gorki Theater: political theatre in intercultural and transcultural contexts
• Theater an der Parkaue: young audiences and community projects
• Studio and workshop visit at Theater Thikwa: diversity and inclusion
• Dachverband Tanz Deutschland and Bundesverband Freie Darstellende Künste at Künstlerhaus Bethanien: the role of national institutions, political advocacy, the artist as her/his own manager

Performances at the theatres listed above plus Schaubühne and Uferstudios.

The course is aimed at performing arts professionals - self managing artists, producers, administrators - with at least five years work experience and a high level of English proficiency.

You can apply for the course through the registration form. Participants will be selected until April 25th by a committee of Goethe-Institut and Summer University.

During the application, Alumni of the Goethe-Institut are kindly asked to mention the program offered by the Goethe-Institut in which they took part in the past. In some cases, the Goethe-Institut can offer proportionately fellowships.

Karin Kirchhoff is a freelance curator, production manager, and dramaturge. She has worked with institutions and artists in Berlin such as Berliner Festspiele, Sophiensaele, Tanzfabrik Berlin, Sasha Waltz & Guests, Rubato, Jo Fabian. From 2005 to 2008 she has worked at the Tanzbüro Berlin and held numerous seminars on cultural management since then.

Since 2009, she has been curating Tanz! Heilbronn, an annual international festival at the Theater Heilbronn. The festival represents a variety of contemporary dance productions, from large companies to works created by young choreographers, including educational formats such as community projects, workshops, dance film, work introductions, etc.

Christine Loriol is a journalist, writer and communications consultant as well as a coach and trainer in public presentation skills. She has been giving workshops and seminaries for many years – especially for professionals in the film industry (for example at www.focal.ch and for the Swiss Film Prize). She is born 1960 and lives in Zurich / Switzerland. She speaks German, English, French and Italian. She is also the president of the NGO «SAO Association – Women for displaced women» and a committed contributor for the empowerment of women.

Jessica Steinke was born 1968 in Berlin and has more than 25 years work experience as theatre director with over 35 productions in 15 city- and state theatres nationwide. She has been teaching for 20 years acting students at UdK, Berlin and is a longstanding editor in contemporary drama. She is a certified systemic consultant and coach (DGSF, GST) with a focus on leadership and presentation / communication skills. After many years living across the globe from Vienna to New York she now lives with her family back in her hometown.
