Transitions - Drawing and Space

This drawing workshop will explore transition spaces of urban Berlin and experiment with the drawing process in an open and interpretive manner. The emphasis will be put on practical artistic work in combination with
critical discourses.

During the introduction we will exchange various ideas on transit spaces and drawing process. Transitions between in- and outside, between here and there, in the actual urban world and mental space – where interspace, movements, traces, boarders and its exceedances matter. We will then in mutual exchange agree on the way we want to deal with the subject and which places to work with.

From our starting point at the Berlin University of the Arts we will explore the city and the urban space. We will begin in the neighborhood and expand the circle day by day in our search for spaces of transition.

The working periods will be combined with studio visits of Berlin based artists and/or exhibition visits.

This course is suitable for people with artistic backgrounds in Fine Arts, Architecture, Design, Visual Communication or even Dance and for people who are generally interested in experimenting with different drawing techniques.

Pauline Kraneis is a Berlin-based artist, born in London and raised in Stuttgart. Since her studies at the Berlin University of the Arts and Glasgow School of Art, drawing has been at the centre of her artistic practice. It is the starting point for observations, reflections, and questioning of the space. The tension between line and space, between two- and three-dimensionality, between abstract thought and real experienced space is initial in her work and has led to an extension of drawing into space. Among other awards, Pauline Kraneis held scholarships from the Berlin Senate and Stiftung Kunstfonds, received The GASAG promotion award, and was a guest at various residency programs such as Künstlerstätte Schloss Bleckede and CPH AIR Copenhagen.

Pauline Kraneis’ work has been shown e.a. at Kupferstichkabinett (Berlin), NGBK (Berlin), Kunstmuseum (Bonn), Kunsthalle Gießen, Bonner Kunstverein, Kasseler Kunstverein, Heidelberger Kunstverein, Halle für Kunst (Lüneburg), Institute of Contemporary Arts/ICA (London), Lodeveans Collection London, Arter (Istanbul), MALG (Pelotas, Brasil), Museo de Arte del Banco de la República (Bogota, Columbia), Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Quito, Ecuador and Museo Nacional de Arte (La Paz, Bolivia), Adam Art Gallery Te Pataka Toi (Wellington, NewZealand), Derek Eller Gallery (New York), Galerie M+R Fricke (Berlin/Düsseldorf). Since 2008, she has been teaching at the Berlin University of the Arts, Kassel University, Kunstakademie Stuttgart, Art Academy Nanjing, China and in 2011/12 as a guest professor at Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus.
