all that nothing causing all that thing

After an introduction of musical composition systems and production techniques we will investigate how these can be reformulated as processes and tools for generative work in a variety of creative fields. no musical background or equipment required.

In this seminar we will explore and engage with fundamental musical composition systems and production techniques to then reformulate and re-contextualise them as generative tools for your own creative work. Guided exercises in listening, imagining, formulating, abstracting and translating will enable students to build systems that can be applied to their practice and give way to further investigations. Students will work individually and in small groups and present their findings throughout the course.

Music is used in various fields of artistic work, but rarely is it reflected upon as a tool in itself. The multiple layers inherent in music composition, analysis and production have a creative potential of ambiguity and are open to more than one interpretation. Engaging with music not only emotionally, but analytically and critically can inform and encourage further generative inquiry. Systems and techniques that have been explored in past workshops are commonly used songforms in popular music, outer-european tuning systems and scales, audio compression and expansion, iteration, delay and modulation.

Although this workshop takes its initial impulse from inquiries into musical concepts it is not a music workshop. Situating itself in an interdisciplinary context this workshop is explicitly open to students who are interested in collaborating across a range practices. Musical background or equipment is not required.
